The Outdoor Program is an integral part of Otkrivatel’s Primary and Elementary curriculum and is designed to provide direct experience with the ecology of this bioregion; develop independence and self-confidence; foster personal responsibility and cooperation; offer challenge and adventure; and encourage environmental awareness and responsibility. An Otkrivatel team member accompanies the children on all Outdoor Program trips. The program is led by an experienced naturalist. As part of the Outdoor Program, Otkrivatel Montessori School organises winter and summer classes and camps – ski, green, sports and forest school, at an extra cost.
In our Elementary program, whole-class field trips are rare. However, outings are initiated by small groups of children under the guidance of the teacher. A “going out” comes naturally from a child’s need to explore a subject beyond the classroom environment. In addition to these student-initiated outings, children go on shopping trips to support class activities, and teachers plan group outings related to a particular topic of study. The school trips allow for the expansion of social knowledge and community building. The field trips are school events and are usually held during school hours.
Occasionally Toddlers and Primary classes will go out as well for field trips and nature walks. These trips are events taking place outside the school for educational purposes. These trips focus on the development of the community of teachers and students, and cooperative learning outside the classroom. School trips complement school classes as through direct observation and experience these events allow students to explore and learn.
