MAGIC Program

Montessori: Attacking Global Issues Conference

Discover International School is excited to announce the launch of the MAGIC program (Montessori: Attacking Global Issues Conference) – a year-round initiative open to upper elementary students (Grades 3-4), middle years (Grades 5-7), and high school students (Grades 8-10). This unique opportunity engages students with pressing global issues, fosters their research and collaboration skills, and prepares them to present real-world solutions at the final MAGIC conference.

Year-Round MAGIC Program

Throughout the year, students will participate in structured monthly workshops, research sessions, and collaborative projects. This process includes mentorship from teachers, guest speaker sessions, and interactive workshops, culminating in the MAGIC conference. Here, students will present their discoveries and solutions, engage in discussions, and work with peers from other schools to create a unified global action plan.

MAGIC is a movement that helps students build critical thinking, research, and collaboration skills as they work towards solving pressing global problems. Beginning in December 2024, participants will actively explore and develop proposals on various topics related to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including:

  • SDG 14: Life Below Water – How can we keep our oceans clean and healthy?
  • SDG 4: Quality Education – How can we help more children attend school?
  • SDG 1: No Poverty – How can we support families in need?
  • SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities – How can we promote sustainable transportation in cities?
  • SDG 15: Life on Land – How can we protect forests and biodiversity in Europe?

As part of their preparation, students develop a “Blueprint for Change”—a document outlining their proposed solutions to global challenges. This document reflects their commitment to positive change and their understanding of the complexity of these issues.

Preparation Timeline

  • November: Registration, program launch, introductory workshops, and assignment of countries and topics.
  • December – March: In-depth research, drafting position papers, Zoom sessions, visual presentations, and guest lectures.
  • April: Final rehearsal for presentations and logistical preparation for the conference.

MAGIC Journey

With this program, you embark on an exciting journey to tackle global challenges! Here’s what it includes:

  • Assigned Topics: Students work in small groups on a specific global issue assigned to them for in-depth research. Understanding the complexity of the topic is essential for proposing effective solutions.
  • Country Representation: Each student explores solutions from the perspective of a specific European country. Their research focuses on the global issue through the lens of this country, examining its unique challenges and strategies.
  • Country Research: Students conduct thorough research on their assigned country, exploring its policies, culture, and existing efforts to address the global issue. This helps them understand how the country fits into the broader conversation on global solutions.
  • Display Board Creation: Students create a colorful and informative display board showcasing their in-depth research on the selected country.
  • Blueprint for Change: Students develop a blueprint for change, highlighting key problems related to their global issue and proposing solutions from their country’s perspective. This blueprint is a key component of their presentation.
  • Zoom Conferences: Students participate in Zoom conferences throughout the preparation process. These sessions provide guidance, support, and an opportunity to collaborate with peers as they refine their research and presentations.

Get ready to make a difference and collaborate with others to create real solutions!
